It has truely been a wonderful experience! There is still lots more for me to tell of our time in the Blue Mountains and of my renewal, and of our last CMSWR gathering so stay in touch. I will post again once I get home and put more pictures up. Thank you for all of your prayers, especially for my renewal. Your prayers and presence were felt. Untill later..... God Bless.

Queridos amigos,

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sistermaruchiblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/going-home-regresamos-casa.html' title='Going Home! We did not go to Bondi beach. We tried to go see whales at a place called Cape Solandar (an hour away by train) but because the sea was so choppy the locals told us it wasn't worth going. We decided to just stay and take a look at the Cronulla beach. It was absolutely beautiful, and the sea was supper choppy and there were a bunch of surfers out there. Here is a pic and a video.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v14.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D37f41366848b4d4b%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330321500%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D477B2ADE5BD36CD9130C0A50CDC638750142052D.398FB27C13D41C0CD33B411B82E985F33FD6710C%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D37f41366848b4d4b%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DyAs-D1K5bp9j5hg-kLuP8LEgUYU&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

After talking to some of the locals they told us to get on a Ferry to Bundeena and to go to the national park there that it would be nice to see. So we did!

The ride started off real smooth and then...we hit the choppy seas (as you can tell Sr. Clarice was thrilled!)

Clarice estaba encantada!)

It took five times for the boat to dock and get people off! The waves were huge! Every time the boat would get close to the dock a few would get off. The ropes snapped four times and we took the boat around 5 different times. (IT WAS VERY EXCITING FOR SOME and not so much for others-I was enjoying it all). (I couldn't help but think of my Garcia family in Miami!)

We walked through the little village to get to Jibbon Beach (it is the National park with the peak in the background - we made it all the way there!) The scenery was beautiful!

After walking on the beach we went up on a trail to find aboriginal rock carvings! They said that the 7pm would but we weren't so sure. There really wasn't another option to get out. It was absolutely FREEZING and the waves were crashing up on the dock. We ran into a sister that was there to pick up some one coming in on the ferry who asked us how we new about the place (she offered to give us a ride to a train station if the ferry didn't make it - there were no buses in town)! Apparantly not to many people know about it. Luckily (or probably thanks to Sr. Clarice's prayers when the ferry arrived it was able to dock and everyone got off and on, on the first try). These are the friends we made that accompanied us the whole day from LA (Coco, Andrew, Ana, Matt, & Amanda).

Today (Wedenesday) we went to the Taronga Zoo in Sydney thanks to the wonderful staff of the Woman's College here at the University of Sydney who arranged everything for all the sisters. We had to take a Ferry from Circular Quay (pronounced "key") across the Sydney Harbor!

We have not stopped since Friday afternoon that we went to work till 10pm. Saturday we were out by 6am for Mass with the Pope and the American Mass, adn then back for 15 minutes or so before leaving to the Vigil. Sunday we got back about 4:30pm after spending the night out and Mass with the Pope with 500,000 people and we were half dead, and finally Monday we were up early again and out by 6am for a Thank You to the volunteers with the Pope (we also went to see the Cathedral and a place called The Rocks (a more fancy part of town). Today has been the first opportunity to write in a while. We will go to Bondi Beach (most famous beach in Sydney) today and then for the rest of the week we have planned to go to the zoo (they say it's excellent), Blue Mountains (say we shouldn't miss this it's about an hour and a half away), and maybe whale watching - if I can figure out how to get there (ooooohhh I'm excited)!!! Well I will write with more detail about our overnight adventures later. Here are some pictures...

Queridos amigos
Hoy no escribire mucho.

The pictures are in backwards order - las fotos estan en orden al revez

CMSWR group pic after Papal thank you

NUN CRAZE!!! This morning we went to our Catechesis at St. Joseph where we were able to catch the talk from one of the Australian bishops before the Mass. After Mass we grabbed our lunch, ate quickly (a baked bean sandwich for me – a first!), and then headed to the Domain with some of the CMSWR sisters to await the arrival of the Pope. When we made it over to the Domain some of the sisters had gotten there earlier and had saved some nice spots by the fence where the Holy Father was going to drive by. It was amazing how within a couple of hours or so we had to begin defending our spots. About two hours before the drive by of the Pope we found ourselves pushed up against the barricade with people pushing from all sides. I spent two hours pretending to be the great wall of China so that some of our smaller and more petit sisters would not get trampled and lose their spots. It was incredible! Since my back was to the big screen, Srs. Margaret Ann and Clarice were kind enough to narrate everything that was happening. What an ordeal! Finally when the Pope mobile got close there was a mad rush of young people towards us. Much to our disappointment the Pope mobile flew by, rather than driving slowly. But we had spent our afternoon with a group of 150 young people from two Marianist high schools in New York. And we got REALLY close to a bunch of strangers and each other. The rest of the afternoon and evening went rather smoothly. While some of the sisters headed off to work we stayed at the Domain to eat and enjoy the concerts. We got our food rather quickly, ran into one of our VES (don’t know if I spell that right) volunteers from Sacred Heart in Uvalde in the late 80s, and sat down on our nice tarp to eat a mystery vegetarian dish. (I believe that’s a first and a last for me, I think it was tofu and potatoes and it was extremely spicy!). We enjoyed a nice African band (I think) while we ate and after dinner we got to see some Aboriginal dances. By about 8pm or so we were too exhausted and too cold to stick around much longer so we went home to rest; let’s see what today brings. Today we will be working again at the Convention Center while the Stations of the Cross are taking place so we will not be able to see that. I think though that the Stations will end where we are at so we might catch the last one. Anyways, here are some more pictures for you to enjoy.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sistermaruchiblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/pope-arrived-llego-el-papa.html' title='POPE ARRIVED! They have been long and tiring but they have been great! Tuesday morning was a bit rough on us. We stood in line and waited for a total of 3 hours or so for our blessed accreditation passes. If there is one thing that has not worked out right for this WYD it has been the accreditation! But we were happy to finally have ours around our necks. With these we will be let in to the different places where we have to work. Having missed lunch (again) we got something quick on our way to our first reconciliation site, the Sydney Convention Center in Darling Harbor. The walk there was very nice. Darling Harbor is very pretty and has great places for the children to play and for people to walk. (Unfortunately my batteries died but I will take pictures on Friday). The Reconciliation site at the Convention Center is very far removed from everything but it is very nice. We have from for up to 32 priests, a section that will be used for a short communal preparation, and then a section for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with the biggest monstrance I’ve ever seen. We are working together with the Evangelization team so it has been great to have some of the other CMSWR sisters with us. We did not have too many people I think because it was the day of the opening Mass and they were all at Barangaroo and there was a concert there and there were also two confession sites there. But there were some that did come to take advantage of the Sacrament and many more that came for adoration. This being a small world I ran into the Cuban priest again!!! And again my heart broke! He is staying at Homebush in the Olympic Park. It sounds nice but they’re in a parking garage of sorts-or something similar to that sleeping on the cold cement floor! You know what it is to come all the way from Cuba, a third world country to sleep on the floor!?! Anyways, I tried to help again; we got him the contacts for the Seminary to see if he could get a room there. I really hope and pray that he did! Finally we were blessed when a WYD volunteer saw we were trying to find a quicker way home and then offered us a ride in his WYD van. It was definitely a blessing! Wednesday was a very exciting day! In the morning we went to Mass at St. Joseph where we caught the very end of the catechesis session that was going on there. It is being run by a Diocese in Boston. After Mass we made our way over to Hyde Park (the park next to the Cathedral) where we had lunch and our shifts for the day. The lunch/dinners have been pretty good. They give us warm food (which is very welcome!). We have a choice between a beef, chicken, vegetable, or lamb stew-like meal. With that we also get a fruit, a drink, and a lamington (typical Auzzie desert, like a little Debbie snack cake with coconut sprinkled on top and maybe a little lighter). Anyways, we found our places and our shift ran from 2pm to 6pm today. Sr. Margaret Ann was working with Confessions outside, Sr. Clarice was in Tent 1 and I was in Tent 2. Let me tell ya, I had some great priest to work with! There were about four or so who stayed for about 4 hours listening to confessions (there shifts were supposed to be only 90 minutes). We really had some great guys to work with. The flow of pilgrims was pretty steady throughout the day and it was great to see that there were quite a few locals that were not pilgrims that took the opportunity to go to confession as well! I also ran into a couple of friends from NAWLINS while working (small world!). After our shift came what I think was the most exciting part of the day! We were on our way to get our food and lo and behold we see lots of cops and media people behind the Cathedral! There were a few people starting to slow down and take a peek. We decided to stick around and see what the fuss was all about (but really there weren’t many that noticed the ordeal). When asking the cops if the Pope was coming through we’d get the “I have no idea what’s going on” answer. Well we waited about 5-10 minutes and Sr. Margaret over heard one of the officers say “the Pope is on the move.” (It really sounds like it’s from a movie or something). Well in no time there were police motor-cycles and cars and right behind them a white car and guess who was in the back seat?!?! Yep! BENNY himself! It was great! He smiled and waved at the very little crowd and they flew right by us. We just happened to be at the right place at the right time! (We really got a good look and I got a good picture of the back of his head..ha ha). Within 15 minutes it was all over and by the time people realized what was going on he was out of sight! From there we went to the “Domain” another grassy area/park to get our food. Food has to be picked up in groups of 6…we’re 3! So we got in a very very long line and hoped for the best. In no time two German girls came around looking for a group to join and the group from New Zealand behind us had 7 people so we were set. The line was very long but the wait did not seem so long in good company. In an hour we got our food and all went along our merry ways. We stayed at the Domain to eat while we heard the Sydney Orchestra and saw an interesting movie about Joan of Arc. At about 9pm we headed to St. Benedict’s to see if we could find Sam (the guy who walked around the world in the name of unity) but no such luck so we went home. It really has been wonderful meeting and talking to so many people! Today (Thursday) is our day off so we will enjoy the catechesis, and the papal welcoming and whatever else we can catch.
Here are some more pictures for ya’ll.

Queridos amig@s!
We have been working very hard trying to help out here in whatever way we can. Many of the sisters have already started their official volunteer work in Evangelization. They go out to different venues to be there for pilgrims that may have questions about our faith, etc. We (Sr. Clarice, Sr. Margaret Ann and I) have not started our official work yet. On Friday we went to the Airport as I told you already. Saturday and Sunday we went back to the Regsitration Call center to help out. They basically just had the three of us on the phones answering all the questions that came in. Since it was the weekend they were low on staff and Sunday we stayed there till about 6pm or so, they have been very grateful for all our help and were sad that we would not be back to help throughout the week. Sunday morning we went to Mass at St. Joseph. It is a very small parish, the majority of the congregation for that Mass consisted of the sisters in our group. But it was wonderful, there were about 5 or 6 other priests there concelebrating and they had a wonderful youth choir. I must say I thought about all of my Teresian Sisters at home when they began singing the final hym...Go tell everyone by the Medial Mission Sisters. I wanted to laugh! The three of us just looked at each other and smiled. I finally talked to the pastor there about renewing my vows and he thought it was wonderful. So, I have a place and a time...8am Mass at St. Joseph Church, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA (hahahah- I think that's funny!) ALL ARE INVITED ;) . Yesterday (Monday) was our most adventurous day. We went to the Polding Center (the Chancery) for our orientation meeting on our official volunteer jobs as Liturgy Assistants (we will be helping at the Confession sites). After our meeting Mgsr. Corrin, who is in charge, came running with an SOS that they needed help accrediting priest so that they could receive their faculties to concelebrate Mass and hear confessions at the Opera House. So the three of us volunteered...little did we know! We were there from 11am to 7pm with out a break and no lunch. There were hundereds of angry priests waiting to get their accreditation, some had waited for hours else where and then were sent to us to wait for another few hours. We had 2 computers at the begining! and then managed to get 2 more! NOT ENOUGH! It was craziness. Needless to say we were quite exhausted when we got out! Today, Tuesday is the official beginning of WYD. There will be an opening Mass for everyone at a place called Barangaroo. Unfortunately we will have to miss that because we will be working tonight. Our first shift is at the Sydney Convention center where they have the Vocations Expo from 6pm to 10pm. Pray for us! The rest of our schedule is ok, we have Thursday off and then Friday we have a very long day from 2pm to 10pm. Finally the night of the vigil Sr. Margaret Ann and I will be working on site from 11:30pm till 1AM! They're really working us! Anyways, I hope to be able to share some more pictures tomorrow. Keep all of us in your prayers. You are in ours! Ohhhh I almost forgot! The pope will have a special Mass at the cathedral for all religious in formation under the age of 35! Sr. Margaret Ann and I got tickets! (It's exciting but some of us are a little sad for those sisters in our group that cannot join us!!)

Hola Amigos!

AIRPORT

WOW! Well today was a very interesting day! Last night we received our volunteer uniforms! It was exciting...they are quite bright which I like. We went to the airport to greet the volunteers that were arriving. There weren't very many volunteers so we just hung around and helped the pilgrims. What an experience! There were people coming in from all over the place. The most memorable for me was a group from Vietnam (they were very excited about taking pictures with the sisters), a Honduran girl who traveled on her own, a Ecuadorian girl who also traveled on her own, the group from Magnificat Travel out of Lafayette, and then the Cuban priest. It was great to see the people from home! I know about magnificat travel's group because that's where the Diocese had been referring people to. There were a couple of people on the group that arrived today that I already knew from NCYC and Abbey Youth fest and it turns out that when WYD starts they will be staying right next door to us! What a small world! Imagine meeting the group from home and then finding out they'll be right next door! How exciting! The most moving for me was definately my encounter with the Cuban priest. When the Cuban priest arrived immediately one of the volunteers that new my background came to tell me. He was the only one from the entire delegation that got the visa to come! His trip had been long and exhausting and now he had to make his way to Melbourne. Ofcourse my heart broke into many little pieces for him so I tried to help him as much as I could. He was walking around with the Cuban flag tied to his neck. Anyway, what a small world, it turns out he knows the Teresian Sisters in Camaguey very well! He belongs to that Diocese and was rattling off the names of all the Sisters he knew! At the end all I could do was put him on a bus to the domestic terminal and ask someone to make sure he got his ticket (which was gonna cost him a fortune I'm sure). Anyway, I gave him my number here in Sydney just in case he needs to reach someone. The funny event was definately the media again! I tell ya it's really funny. I got interviewed and had pictures of Sr. Margaret Ann and I taken for a local free paper called the South Korean (I'll let you know when the article comes out)!

Here are some more pictures for you to enjoy.

China town
Parte China de Sydney

Vietnamese Group
Grupo Vietnamita

Girl from Honduras
Muchacha Hondureña

NEWS CLIP - NOTICIERO

As I said before...a bunch of "habited" nuns in Sydney is quite a spectacle. We made it on the evening news as well...here's the clip (warning they do show 2 seconds of people that aren't happy but the rest of the clip is good...they show us at the end)
http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2008/07/09/2299250.htm

Well so far are trip has been quite and adventure. We are working at the Registration Call Center answering all the phone calls that come in. The phones seem to never stop. The people here in Sydney have been wonderful, very warm and welcoming. It has been especially great getting to know the ones that we are working with. Yesterday we made our way over to the Sydney Harbor and Opera House. It is absolutely beautiful! But it was very windy and very cold, we thought our veils were going to fly off - it would have been quite a site! (I did look for NEMO but he seems to have gone home already ;). We have been walking A LOT-uphill and downhill!. You may not recognize me when I get home...hahaha...ok a bit of an exaggeration. Sydney is very multicultural!!! We have tried all sorts of different foods. Today we went to China town and had some "emperor puffs" that were absolutely delicious and cheap! Well, I will try to continue to keep things up to date. Tomorrow we will be going to the airport to welcome the pilgrims! It should be exciting! Oh! I also think we found a church where I can renew vows...guess the name..St. Joseph! I thought it was appropriate and one of the priests there was very nice! We will talk to him later on.

Hemos estado caminando cantidad - y sube loma y baja loma!
<img width='1' height='1' very exciting and full day. We began our work as volunteers helping out in the registration department answering calls and emails. It is quite a lot of work! Most of the day we spent being trained and receiving A LOT of information.

At lunch the WYD people told us that they wanted to take some pictures of us so we went to the park to be greated by way too many press people! We are a spectacle here in Sydney! Attached is the link to one of the newspaper articles.

Well I seem to be running out of time. I will tell you more later.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/world-youth-day/festival-will-bring-gifts-from-god-say-pilgrims/2008/07/08/1215282835384.html

From the Land Down Under - Desde la tierra de abajo

Hello friends!!!
We made it! After a very loooonnnnggg trip we arrived safely in Sydney. What we've seen so far is beautiful but we have not seen much since all we've done is go from the airport to the college.
When we arrived yesterday at 6 something am they suggested that it was best to stay up till it was night time here so we did! It was quite a challenge. We went to Mass at the oldest church here in Sydney (30min walking distance) and then we went to the mall to eat. That was an experience in itself. They have lots of international foods so we tried something Turkish. Well, I am running out of time for now.
Anyways, right now I am having technical difficulties because I cannot connect to the wi-fi world. There is a computer room here that we can use but I can't upload any pictures because I forgot my pen drive (oops!) and it's usually very full!!! (It seems that the best time to come is in the morning which most of you know is very difficult for me but I will try!!)

Australia Here I Come! -- Australia Me Espera!

Only two days left before our departure! The Conference of Major Superiors (a group of womens' religious congregations in the US) has kindly sponsored our trip. We will leave New Orleans and meet up with about 50 other sisters in LA. Together with the other sisters we will arrive in Sydney for some volunteer orientations and work in preparation for WYD 2008. The three of us will be helping out in the liturgy department of WYD with the reconciliation and adoration sites, etc. I hope to keep this blog up throughout my time in Sydney so that I can share with ya'll our Outback Adventures and the many blessings that I'm sure will come our way. I am very excited and looking forward to this awesome experience of our Universal Church!
I hope you enjoy the blog ...

(This is the pic I had to take for my volunteer ID)
